I'm from Chicago, I love hot dogs. I love this place! Fantastic. Service was 10 stars. Thanks Jerica. Root beer float is a must. I will hit this place anytime I get close.
Gene's Root Beer and Hot Dogs
About this place
In Anderson, Gene's Root Beer and Hot Dogs reads less like a checklist stop and more like a local table you hear about from someone who already ate there. a welcoming room frames the visit; an easygoing pace keeps you from rushing the meal.
The cooking favors clarity over trend: house specialties, plates built for sharing, and the kitchen's daily strengths show the kitchen's habits more than a marketing list.
Service reads as attentive without hovering - the kind of room where questions about the day's specials get straight answers. Weeknights usually run quieter than weekends. The listing address is 640 S Scatterfield Rd, Anderson, IN 46012.
That is the Platefolk brief in one stop: Gene's Root Beer and Hot Dogs in Anderson, a solid meal on the table, and a visit that still feels like someone else's good tip.
Before you visit, skim recent neighbor notes on the listing and confirm hours on the door. Platefolk keeps this page as a field guide, not a frozen brochure - the best proof is still sitting down for a meal.
What we value here is consistency: a kitchen that repeats its strengths, a room that does not treat guests like tickets, and a Gene's Root Beer and Hot Dogs visit that still feels worth the trip across town. Bring curiosity, order something the staff recommends, and leave a short note afterward so the next diner arrives wiser.

Days gone by atmosphere. We had polish sausage, coleslaw horsey dog, standard ball park dog and onion rings AND, to wash it all down, homemade root beer. No complaints on anything. Needed more napkins and promptly received them! Whenever we're in Anderson, we'll eat there!
Gene’s Root Beer is a stable of Anderson, Indiana. This is some of the greatest made in-home root beer I’ve ever had. The food is really good, and service is quick. It definitely gives a “vintage aesthetic” as the kids call it these days. There is no indoor seating, service is direct to your vehicle, although there are two picnic benches outside during summer. Gene’s is only open part of the year from March to August. I would highly recommend visiting it if you are passing by or if you are in the area.
Just like I remembered from growing up. Food tasted just the same and the root beer was perfect. Atmosphete was just like i remembered too... so fun. Our waitress was outstanding... friendly and attentive.
We love this place so much we drive here from ohio just for lunch. My husband has ate hot dogs all over the u.s. and these are his favorite. The fried mushrooms are the best I've ever had. Service is super fast and the food is fresh everytime. Only negative is you get mayo packets instead of them putting it on but believe me that's a small price to pay for the quality and friendly service you get here.
Wonderful old time root beer stand with actual car hop wait staff! I got the tenderloin sandwich and onion rings, while the rest of the fam chowed down on Gene's famous Slaw Dogs with Spanish sauce! Yum!
Wonderful place! Fast service, good old fashioned food, hot dogs, onion rings, fries, great root beer in a frosted mug)?
What is there to say that hasn’t been said about this American treasure? The service was great followed with beautiful smiles. I ordered 3 chili dogs and a 32oz root beer. It all hit perfectly. I never wanted it to end. The music playing set you in a Time Machine back to the hay day of hotdog joints and roll n roll. For a brief moment you can forget all you worries and just enjoy the simple things
First of all, Audrey is FANTASTIC. If you get her, you'll love her. This was my husband's and my first time coming here based on the Indiana Culinary Passport. Local spot with house made root beer and tasty toppings for their hot dogs. It's so classic, a real-life example of what Sonic is trying to harken back to but can't really claim. You drive up and a car hop will bring your food and rest your meal on the window like old times. Prices are excellent, food is solid (really enjoyed the hot dogs; fried and onion rings were fine). Husband definitely recommends the slaw dog if you like spice (order the slaw on the side to control your spice levels). The root beer is smooth and flavorful. The ice cream was tasty also with a flavor twist of your choice added in!It was kind of random for us to come here but we're so glad we did. We highly recommend and I'll be back for sure!
I love this place! Wonderful root beer (diet is good!) And genuine chocolate/vanilla twist cones. Love the fried mushrooms. The waitstaff is courteous and attentive!
